Interview with Scott Guerin, PhD, Co-author of Looking for Angels

10 Minute Read

Dr. Scott Guerin, a psychologist, and Nichole Bigley, a renowned psychic intuitive, are an unlikely duo that came together to write the book Looking for Angels: A Guide to Understanding and Connecting with Angels. The authors’ recent international study showed that a remarkable 75% of people believe in the existence of angels! Whether you are a true believer, a healthy skeptic, or somewhere in between, this guidebook will meet you where you are providing a history of angels through world religions, data and insights, expert tips, and practical exercises for connecting and communicating with angels yourself.

We spoke with co-author Scott Guerin, PhD about his experience writing the book and his own spiritual journey.

At the beginning of Looking for Angels, you explain what seems to be divine intervention that connected you and your co-author Nichole Bigley to collaborate on this book. Can you tell us a bit about that and was there any hesitation from either of you after you connected or did it feel right immediately?

Yes, absolutely divine intervention. While I was starting to think about writing a book on angels, I was at a holistic health show. I had a booth selling my other books, and a poster saying that I was writing a book about angels. The poster had a call to action, “If anyone has an angel story, please send them in.” Across the aisle from my booth was a tarot card reader and she had a very nice booth, it was beautiful. At the end of the three-day event, I went over to her and chatted a bit and then asked, “So what do you think of my booth?”  She was a very abrupt woman, very direct. And she said, “Well, it looks too academic, you don't have any angels or figurines, yet you talk about angels, so you might want to fix that.”  I thanked her for her feedback and then she continued, “You know what you need for your new book, you're going to need a woman's voice as well. That'll help mix it up and liven it up a little bit, and she could cover more things that you may not have included in the academic side.”

On that same day, Nichole, who lives in Ohio, was preparing for a session with a client through prayer and meditation. And she received a message from her angels that she should write about them—what a person’s “spirit team” consists of, who the archangels are and what they do, how guardian angels and spirit guides differ, and how people can connect with them.  Initially, she pushed back and said, “Well, I'd love to, but I'm so swamped. I can't do this alone.”  And added that she would do it but needed a person and resources to help write it.

I had been listening to Nichole’s podcast A Psychic’s Story, and thought she might be a possible collaborator. So, the day after I got back from the conference, I sent her an email.  I explained that I knew her from her podcast, that I was working on a book, and I outlined my book idea and proposed collaborating. I knew she was busy and I may never hear back. But almost immediately, she responded positively and our collaboration began. That is divine intervention!

Wow, that is fantastic. So, the book about angels is guided by spirit guides and angels!

Oh, yes, and we kept having other “coincidences” like that throughout the development of the book that confirmed our direction. Connections kept showing up right on time from our editor to our wonderful book designer and several other people who appeared right when we needed them. These were ongoing confirmations that we were on the right track.

You and Nichole have very different backgrounds. You have a PhD in Psychology and Nichole is a psychic intuitive. This book is unique in how it explores angels from a more historical and scientific perspective, and she discusses how individuals can connect with angels offering practical tools. It feels like part history book, part guidebook. Is that what you intended from the beginning?

Yes, we always thought of it as a guide. We were on the same page from the beginning saying people are on different parts of their journey and needed a guide that they could revisit depending on what they wanted to explore. From my research to see what books on angels were available I realized that there was nothing else out there quite like this. A lot of my friends are engineers and scientists, so people like them gravitate towards the first part of the book that reviews the religious, scientific, and psychological perspectives. And in these sections, I start teeing up that, hey, there's more to science than scientists know, and the mind is more complex than psychologists know. I also state in the book that quantum physics, while not proving the existence of angles and the spirit world, blurs the lines between what we know though conventional Newtonian psychics and a spiritual world.

In the second half of the book, Nichole offers practical tools and guidance for connecting with angels. Readers can jump into those exercises at the pace or level of interest that works for them. So, we like to remind people that it is a guide. Our hope is that it meets each person where they are and they use the book in the way that works best for them.

It’s interesting how you discuss and compare angels in world religions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism. You clearly did an enormous amount of research. Was there a particular story about angels that surprised you during your research?

What comes to mind is the story that sparked this book for me, even before I met Nichole. I was learning about Archangel Metatron because I'd heard the name here and there in the religious texts and it intrigued me because the name Metatron sounded like one of the characters in Michael Bay’s transformer movies! When I read more about Archangel Metatron, I was really fascinated. The kicker for me was learning about how he influenced Carlos Santana in the making of a revival album in the late nineties, Supernatural. And, how the angel helped Carlos rekindle his career to astounding levels and, as a result, he was able to help millions of people heal from trauma. I don't want to get into the whole story now, but I find the story of Metatron and Carlos Santana to be one of the most powerful angel stories in modern day. There is one chapter dedicated to this story because it was so powerful for me.

That’s a good teaser… people will have to read the book to learn more!

Yes, it’s my favorite angel story.

What motivated you to include chapters on the scientific and psychological perspectives?

My primary motivation to include these was it reflected my own journey. As a child and young man, I grew up as a protestant Christian. Even though I belonged to a few different denominations, I always threw myself in 100% of what was required. I was raised a Lutheran, then got into the born-again movement, then I left that to join the Presbyterian church for several years. But despite of all my devotion, I had a tragic time where my life fell apart. I came out of that saying, forget religion, I'm done. It didn't help me. Where was God when I needed him? And then that's when I delved into scientific, psychological studies.

You were looking for answers. Nothing satisfied you, so you turned to science?

Yes, yes. While getting my doctorate degree, my mentor was very good at helping me keep a foot in grounded science, but to not be afraid to step outside and consider things that were not conventional. I think that, and I've said this many times that I believe that is why I'm here on this planet at this time, to be a bridge for people moving from organized religion to a direct connection to our spiritual world. I’ve had deep experiences with religion, science, and psychology, and see a spiritual thread through all of them.

Your co-author Nichole Bigley, shares a number of exercises to help people connect directly to angels. Different things work for different people. Can you share what has worked for you?

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I believe that quieting the mind is a key to spiritual growth. You've got to be able to quiet your mind, in my perspective, because that's when we can start listening, that's when we can start trusting, and that's where we can start connecting into that intuition. So, I encourage everyone to do that. During graduate school, I went to a 10-day Vipassana retreat which included a vow of silence for the entire time and meditation sessions that lasted for about nine hours each day. You come away from that understanding very clearly when your mind is quiet or not. I’m also big into music like meditations, singing bowls, and chants, they move me quite a bit. But overall, I think the key is to find how you can quiet your mind, and then practice connecting with your spirit team.

Nichole walks the reader through how to connect with their spirit team and part of that includes providing seven meditations; becoming present with oneness, how to connect with higher self, how to open psychic senses, how to set energetic boundaries, how to connect with your spirit team and more. The audiobook version of Looking for Angels has outsold the paperback and I think it is in large part due to people wanting to listen as they practice the different meditations.

What would be the key message you would like readers of this article or your book to take away?

My big message for everyone reading is that that anyone can learn to connect with spirit, anyone. People like Nichole have known since childhood that she could connect with spirit. But, many people are like I was -  I didn’t have a psychic bone in my body, no connections at all. But in the last year my spiritual connections have expanded tremendously. My message to everyone is that anyone can deepen their abilities to a level that's unbelievable, and when that happens, your life can explode – in a good way. Anyone can learn to connect and deepen their relationship with spirit, without exception.  All it takes is a little trust, a little time, and opening your heart.

Thank you so much Scott for that inspiration and your wisdom. If people want to purchase the book or know more about you and Nichole, where can they find you.
