Cindy Luffred Talks Spiritual Mediumship, Grief, and a Soul’s Evolution

7 Minute Read

We talked with Woo School educator Cindy Luffred to learn more about how spiritual mediumship works, how it can help people cope with grief and loss, what to expect when working with a medium, and advice for finding a trusted medium

Do you find that grief and a desire to connect with someone who has died is one of the main reasons that people book appointments with you?

Yes, I would say grief drives people to see me but I would note that there are many different forms of grief. Grief after a death is common, but I would say there's also grief in loss of jobs, the ending of relationships, or even having difficult parents and wanting to set boundaries around something like that. There are many different forms of grief within our lives and people come to me looking for help, advice, and answers.

Most often, there is something happening in someone’s life and they are trying to answer the questions WHY? Why did this happen? Why did I have to go through this? What’s the lesson?

Those are big questions! Are you able to help people find the answers they are looking for?

The short explanation to the challenges people face is that we are here for lessons, learning, and the evolution of our soul. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the biggest jumps in evolution come from contrast - things that are uncomfortable. And going through the challenges allows us to be able to experience more joy. As the saying goes, you can’t have the rainbow without the rain. Truly nothing happens in our life that isn’t given as an option, as a lesson for our soul.

So our struggles are a choice that our soul makes?

An inconvenient truth about our most challenging experiences is that our soul planned it. And since you planned it, it means you also have a solution. I’ve talked to people that are really, really struggling. They can’t fathom why they are struggling whether they have a terminal disease, a chronic illness, or can’t find love. The universe provides a balance to all the difficulties, an equal solution. I truly believe that there is always an answer out there. I advise my clients that they have to get to the place where they can see it, believe it, and heal from it.

Many people are skeptical of mediumship. Does that cause a problem when clients visit you and hope to connect with someone in spirit?

The type of mediumship that I practice is very evidentiary, offering information that only the person in spirit could know. It helps people validate and it cuts through the logical mind. When someone comes to me, the spirit on the other side has orchestrated that meeting. So I let the spirit know that they must bring me some immediate evidence or validation. That’s how I work.

It is important to me to provide some information that can’t be explained any other way. I work with some celebrity clients and there is an enormous amount of information about their lives online. Even with them, I work with spirit to deliver information that is so personal that it can only have come from spirit, whether it is about their childhood, an inside joke they shared, a conversation they had in the car with a friend, or that they just dropped off their grandmother’s fur coat at the dry cleaner! Sometimes the most powerful messages are quite mundane things but they offer validation that deceased loved ones are with us in our daily lives.

So you always start with some validation from spirit to quell any skepticism?

The funny thing is, it doesn’t always come in right at the beginning. I’m not sure how other mediums work, but my spirit guides are a little cheeky and I think they love to throw in fun zingers at the end!

Spirit comes through quite enthusiastically and sometimes starts with messages they want to give the person. Often near the end, they drop in some piece of undisputed evidence that really seals the belief that spirit is delivering the messages. I record all my sessions as I think it’s important for people to be able to go back and listen from the beginning. It’s a lot to take in.

How does the information come to you? How does your mediumship work?

Everyone has their own language with spirit. People ask how it comes to me, do I hear them? What if the spirit speaks another language? None of that stuff matters because I am very visual and they are showing me symbols, signs, and experiences in my life that help me understand what to talk about. Those signs and symbols mean something to me as I have developed this communication system with my spirit guides over time. It is different for different people but that is how it works for me.

I often say that however you learned in school is usually how your intuition shows up first. If you are an auditory learner, you will hear things first. If you are visual, you see things. Kinesthetic or physical learners may feel it. Consider your learning style and that is how you can start to tune into how your own intuition shows up.

Do you have advice about how to get the most out of a session with a spiritual medium?

If you are hoping to connect with someone in spirit, start talking to your loved one. Ask them to come forward and you can even ask them to say or show something specific. However, while it is fine to ask them to bring up a specific thing, do not let that be the only thing that will allow you to believe or you will walk away disappointed. Be open. Messages come through in so many different ways.

And for those who are worried about mediums that prey on grief or vulnerability, what advice do you have about finding a trusted spiritual medium to work with?

Ask for validation. That is why I work the way I do asking for my spirit guides to provide specific details. Working with a medium should be a positive experience. If anyone ever tries to scare you into paying them more money, run! For example, if they tell you that you have dark energy attached to you and you have to come back for another session to remove it, that is a bad sign. Also, use your intuition. It can be hard when you are feeling desperate or grieving but take a moment to tune in and ask yourself if it feels like a positive connection or a good person to talk to. Those gut instincts and hairs on the back of your neck are real - listen to them

What is the best way to find a trusted spiritual medium to work?

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any sort of “Consumer Reports” for mediums in the past. I’m happy to be partnering with the Woo School and that you are launching a vetted directory - it is really something that is needed. You can use google and look at reviews and word of mouth or recommendations from friends and family are also helpful.

The most sought-after spiritual mediums often have long waitlists and appointments can be expensive. Are there other ways people can experience mediumship or connect with spirit?

Yes, it’s true that individual appointments can take some time. Many mediums have group opportunities for people, which can be a good way to start. I offer group sessions for $35 every month that allow more people to experience a session. While you may not get an individual reading in the group session, you were likely guided there and will hear something for someone else that is meaningful to you. Group readings can be fun in the same way that being at a wedding is meaningful because you get to be in the presence of love. A group reading can be powerful to be in the presence of healing, even if it isn’t your own private experience.

At home, I encourage people to work on their own to connect with spirit. Journaling is one of the easiest ways. Try free writing and see what comes to you or write down questions before bed and see what you dream about or what comes to you in the morning. I love oracle decks and tarot cards as well. I have a friend Andy who is in spirit and in the morning, I sometimes ask him what I need to know for the day and then pull an Oracle card. The message is from him.

Through all these experiences, my hope is that people are able to cut through the ego, their minds, or cultural conditioning that leads us to believe only in the things that we see around us. There is so much more.
